STARS Sub-Acute Adolescent

Treatment Facility

San Leandro, California

The STARS facility provides outpatient, residential and sub-acute care for emotionally disturbed adolescents. Located within the campus of a county hospital, the facility has four residential cottages, an activities building with administrative functions and a large multi-purpose/dining room, a school building, and a skilled nursing facility. The Design Partnership planned the STARS facility as a village, with the buildings encircling a communal courtyard used for recreation, performances, and as an outdoor classroom. Attention was paid to maintain safety and security in a non-institutional manner, and without compromising the privacy and dignity of the children.
